關於歷史演義系列就算古代鴻儒，讀正史也不算輕鬆，對於現代人而言，讀正史更是仰之彌高，望而生畏。偶然勉強開卷，卻是充滿古言古語，艱深典故，終究難以卒讀。因此，明清兩代，有許多文人墨客受到施耐庵水滸傳及羅貫中三國演義的啟發，紛紛將浩繁深奧的正史材料，改寫成可以深入大眾生活的歷史演義白話小說。當時的白話，雖有時空與俚俗的差異而無法全然理解，但是讀來並不困難，一回兩回之後，即可領略歷史曲折與人物血淚的趣味。故
