劉勰字彥和，原籍東莞(今山東省莒縣境內)。 祖父靈真，宋司空秀的弟弟。父親名劉尚，曾擔任越騎校尉。劉勰很早就成了孤兒，他發憤圖強，熱愛學習。因為家裡太窮而沒有娶妻結婚，和沙門的僧人住在一起，十多年後，他對那些經文都很精通。他分門別類地整理了這些經文，抄錄下來，還為經文寫了序言。如今定林寺裡面藏的經文，都是劉勰編寫修訂的。天監初年，劉勰開始擔任奉朝請，兼職做中軍臨川王宏的秘書，後升職擔任車騎倉曹參軍。擔任太末縣縣令時，政績清正廉潔。
